Some hotels get a lot of the details right, but Heckfield Place truly feels like every single element has been carefully considered to be as close to perfection as possible. Less than an hour from London, it’s truly special, whether for a romantic getaway or a refined yet family-friendly retreat.
From the moment we arrived, we were swept up in the experience. Nicola, our own modern-day Mary Poppins, guided us through the house and made sure we had everything we needed, including a beautifully curated toy chest sent to our room for our son. Thoughtfulness is at the core of Heckfield’s hospitality, down to the smallest details like the freshly ground coffee and pour-over brewer in the mini bar to the bath salts next to the tub. The mudroom (if you can call it that), has rows of meticulously cleaned and organised wellies of every size and a cabinet of jackets to borrow for walks around the estate in all weather.

For families, they provide everything: tiny wellie boots for countryside adventures, Hector the bear with his bed and custom book, organic bath products, and even a wooden bath thermometer. But there are equally indulgent spaces for adults, like the sprawling spa, where children and cameras are nowhere to be found.

One of our favorite traditions quickly became afternoon tea in the drawing room, where a different multi-layered cake appeared each day. Our son dubbed it “cake and puzzles” time, a ritual we all looked forward to.
With Skye Gyngell at the helm, the food at Heckfield Place is exceptional. Everything is hyper-local, from the milk sourced from their own herd of cows to herbs picked fresh from the garden. Even the vanilla ice cream was made with house-roasted vanilla beans.

The included in-room snacks and drinks are another highlight — cheese straws, anyone? And breakfast is a full-fledged dining experience, not an afterthought. We couldn’t get enough of the cheese and herb scones, thick yogurt with berries, latkes with smoked trout, and even the scrambled eggs and bacon, which somehow tasted better than anywhere else.

Be sure to book a table at both of the hotel’s restaurants, but start the evening with a cocktail at the Moon Bar. At Marle, the potatoes with herbs are a must—crispy on the outside, perfectly seasoned, and impossible to stop eating. For a more relaxed meal, Hearth offers fire-cooked dishes with deep, smoky flavors. More on both coming soon.

Even the room service feels special, with thoughtful details that go beyond the usual hotel tray. Meals arrive in a charming basket, making it feel more like an intimate picnic than standard in-room dining. The menu highlights fresh, seasonal ingredients—think handmade pasta with rich, slow-cooked lamb ragù sourced from the farm, or crisp endive freshly picked from the garden. Every dish is bursting with flavor and carefully prepared, ensuring that even a quiet night in feels indulgent.

Heckfield isn’t just about luxury, but it’s also deeply sustainable. From the way they reuse waste to power the boilers to their regenerative approach to farming, everything is designed with the future in mind.
If you’re looking for a place where everything just works, where no detail is overlooked, and where you feel truly cared for, Heckfield Place is it. It’s hands down one of our favorite hotels, absolutely worth the trip, and we’ll absolutely be back!
