Located just outside Bordeaux — about a 20-minute drive from both the city and airport — Les Sources de Caudalie is the vineyard-side retreat of Château Smith Haut Lafitte, the famed Grand Cru Classé estate in Graves. Housed in six timber-framed buildings designed by architect Yves Collet using reclaimed materials, the resort extends around a serene pond and includes the renowned Caudalie Spa, home to the original vinotherapy treatments which use grape extracts and natural thermal spring water to create luxurious skincare.

We stayed in a comfortably appointed room that was honestly beginning to show its age, but couldn’t help but be captivated by the countryside charm. Each room comes with its own terrace or balcony overlooking the vineyards, offering access to the spa and peaceful property directly out the back door.

Dining options span three venues. The two-Michelin-starred La Grand’Vigne, led by Chef Nicolas Masse and inspired by the region’s seasonal bounty, was unfortunately closed during our stay. We dined instead at La Table du Lavoir, a casual bistro in a former washhouse. We loved the rustic-chic ambiance, with bistro tables surrounding the giant old wash basin. It served solid French classics sourced locally, although none of the dishes stood out as particularly memorable compared to the high expectations set by the estate’s flagship restaurant.

The highlight of the property to us, however, was the wine bar Rouge, a welcoming space centered around a sculptural timber counter. We enjoyed sampling glasses of Château Smith Haut Lafitte alongside tapas-style snacks, the standout being beef and oyster tartare (a regional specialty) served in oyster shells.

As we mentioned above, the spa and onsite products focus on grape-based vinotherapy. We did not experience the spa for ourselves on this visit, but did take home the generous samples of the products left in the room. We loved the indoor pool in a restored barn. It was light and airy while protected from the elements, making it a year-round retreat.

If you’re seeking a peaceful blend of wine country calm, vine-based wellness, and unpretentious dining, Les Sources de Caudalie offers a grounded yet refined escape near Bordeaux. It’s one of the rare places where you can unwind in the vines, enjoy spa treatments and rustic dining, yet be back in Bordeaux’s city center for restaurants and shopping or airport in under half an hour.
