Hotel Belles Rives in Antibes is more than just a luxury beach hotel on the French Riviera; it’s a piece of living history. Originally a private villa that hosted F. Scott Fitzgerald, this charming hotel has been welcoming guests since the 1920s. Owned by the Estène-Chauvin family for decades, Belles Rives stands as a testament to timeless elegance.
One of the hotel’s most unique claims to fame is its historic connection to waterskiing. It’s said that the first-ever water ski race took place in the waters just off the Belles Rives. It hosts the one of the world’s oldest water ski clubs, offering an exhilarating experience on the pristine waters of the French Riviera. Established in the 1930s, the club attracts both amateurs and professionals. Guests enjoy expert instruction and state-of-the-art equipment, making it an ideal spot for both seasoned skiers and beginners looking to try something new.
While the hotel boasts a small sandy beach, the real draw is on the pier. For €90 per day (nonresident price), you can secure a spot on the expansive dock, which offers unparalleled views of the sparkling Mediterranean Sea and direct access to the water from almost every chair. It’s best to arrive early for the best chairs, as reservations for specific spots aren’t available.
Hotel Belles Rives has a Michelin-starred restaurant, but we went to their casual seaside restaurant La Plage where we enjoyed fresh seafood, pasta, and a Niçoise salad right by the water. A standout dish is the burrata, tomato, and peach salad – crisp, refreshing, and perfect for a hot day.
The hotel’s decor is a nautically-themed nod to Art Deco, featuring blues, whites, and metallics, complemented by vibrant pink bougainvilleas outside. There’s an old-world charm in every detail, from the period elevator – just remember to close the doors properly! – to the simple yet elegant rooms with terraces overlooking the water with stunning views.
Why Choose Belles Rives? Hotel Belles Rives isn’t about modern amenities like pools – though you do have access to their sister property if you need a swim. It’s about being on the water, soaking in the history, and enjoying the unique charm that only a historic hotel can offer. Whether you’re here for the water skiing or the beautiful views, Belles Rives promises a memorable stay.
