If you’re planning a wine tasting trip to northern Italy and are a wine enthusiast, you are in for a treat! The northern Italian Piedmont region is known for some of the best wines in the country, and there are several wineries that will leave you in awe. Here are wineries and enotecas that you shouldn’t miss on your trip:
Brezza (Barolo) – This winery has been producing wine since the 19th century and is known for its elegant and relatively accessible Barolo wines. You can book a tasting of their wines by appointment. The winery is also within walking distance to the center of the town of Barolo, so you can explore a bit after your tasting experience.

Cascina Fontana (Barolo) – This is a family-owned winery in Barolo that has been producing wine for over 100 years and is also relatively accessible with respect to price point and the ability to purchase wines during your visit.

G.B. Burlotto (Barolo) – This winery is located in the heart of the Barolo region and produces some of the finest wines in the area and is a legendary producer. We suggest emailing months in advance of your anticipated visit to maximize the chance of getting an appointment and do not expect to be offered any of the single vineyard wines. The family also runs a small B&B just across from the winery and you might maximize your chance of a visit to the winery by booking for the night here.

Produttori del Barbaresco (Barbaresco) – This is a cooperative winery in the Barbaresco region that produces some of the finest wines in the area. They’re generally a bit more accessible than Barolo. You can visit their tasting room and taste their wines without an appointment but will need to sign up on the waiting list to access their higher-end bottles.
Keep in mind that most of these wineries require an appointment for tastings, so be sure to call or email ahead of time. Also, don’t forget to take a few bottles of your favorite wines home with you. Every airline we have flown on has accepted a case of wine as one item of checked luggage, so just make sure it’s appropriately packaged.
