Brewery Bhavana was by far our favorite restaurant we visited on our recent trip to Raleigh. This brewery / dim sum restaurant / flower shop / bookstore is located right downtown and is not to be missed if you’re visiting Raleigh.
Brewery Bhavana is a collaboration between Patrick Woodson, a former homebrewer and now master brewer of Brewery Bhavana, and the owners of Bida Manda, the Laotian restaurant and bar next door, another place that we highly recommend. The space is large and airy, accented by a long bar and marble wall lined with taps. In the center of the restaurant, you can peruse a library of interesting books while waiting for a table, and a flower shop offers fresh flowers.
We tried several of the beers and we loved everything we tasted. The beers are balanced and elegant, with names that evoke a connection to the earth, like “Plow,” “Sow,” “Till,” and “Bloom.” All paired nicely with the selections of Dim Sum we ordered. Two of our favorites were the General Tso chicken tossed in sweet and tangy Hibiscus sauce and the scallion pancakes with bone marrow and coconut-soy oxtail jam.
Based on our experience, it’s not surprising that Brewery Bhavana was named one of 2017’s best new restaurants by Bon Appetit and both Chef Ashley Christensen and the restaurant are semifinalists for James Beard Awards.
