When it comes to experiencing the festive season in all its glory, Europe’s Christmas markets are a must-visit. These markets, known for their vibrant atmosphere, charming stalls, hearty street food, and warming beverages, offer a unique way to dive into the holiday spirit. Each market brings its own flavor and customs. Whether you’re sipping on hot mulled wine, browsing handcrafted gifts, or simply soaking in the festive cheer and giant Christmas trees, these markets are not just shopping destinations but a celebration of winter’s magic.
Montreux Christmas Market
Set against the picturesque backdrop of Lake Geneva, Montreux’s Christmas market is an experience unlike any other. Right by the shimmering waters of the lake, the Swiss market has carved out a distinctive charm that’s hard to replicate.
Zurich Christmas Market
This is by far our favorite Christmas market in Zurich. If you only have a limited amount of time, we highly recommend going to it. This is not one of the oldest Christmas markets in Zurich, but it is one of the largest and most fun.
Frankfurt Christmas Market
The Frankfurt Christmas Market is one of Germany’s oldest and biggest. Located right in the heart of the city, it takes over the Romberg area, which sits in Frankfurt’s historic center. The buildings are in the classic style that just adds to the charm of the backdrop.
Munich Christmas Market
Probably one of our favorite cities for Christmas markets in Germany, this city is full of Christmas markets of all types, including the largest “crib” market in Germany, which sells nativity scenes.
Nuremberg Christmas Market
Take a carriage ride around the old city from the Christmas market. You’ll find dozens of stalls offering gingerbread here.
Leipzig Christmas Market
Leipzig was historically a merchant city that was a crossroads of the trade routes of Europe. It’s known for musicians like JS Bach, Felix Mendelssohn, and Robert Schumann. A live nativity scene with sheep is one of the highlights of their Christmas market, and we were especially impressed with their paper houses and intricate paper stars.
Dresden Christmas Market
Dresden is a beautiful Baroque city with one of the least touristy markets you’ll find and Christmas stars are hanging everywhere. It’s also the oldest Christmas market in Germany, famous for its stollen.
