Whether heading to Germany for vacation or work, we are always looking for the best places to eat, drink, and experience. Nuremberg is a charming Bavarian city with so much to offer. We arrived by train, and as soon as we exited the station, we were amazed by the adorable, historic city lined with beautiful buildings and enclosed by a medieval wall. After checking into our hotel, we immediately headed to Zum Gulden Stern Historische Bratwurstküche for lunch, which is the oldest sausage restaurant in Nuremberg.
Zum Gulden Stern has been making traditional Nuremberg sausages since the 1400s, and the chef still roasts them over an open beechwood fire. Pairing the sausages with beer is the perfect way to warm up on a chilly day. This place has been around for a while, and the staff didn’t speak much English, so you won’t find innovative food, but you will have the best sausage in town. Also as an FYI, Nuremberg sausages are small; by regulation, they can be no longer than 9 centimeters.
If you’re interested in beer, check Altstadthof Brewery. They offer historic cave tours, and after your tour, you can stay for a hearty lunch.
For a more modern casual lunch or dinner, try Frank’ness. It’s located under the chef’s Michelin starred restaurant, but this is a more casual and fun atmosphere. You can find everything from pizza to elevated sandwiches. The staff is young and friendly, super easy to talk with, and can give you recommendations for food or cocktails. (They have a lovely list of local gins).
For a more high-end experience, head to one of the Michelin starred restaurants. We had a wonderful evening at Entenstuben (see more here). The cost was a small fraction of a Michelin starred restaurant in San Francisco, and the level of food and service was exceptional. Notably absent was the pretentiousness that often pervades American fine dining restaurants and the menu included local German wine pairings along with seafood, seasonal vegetables, and an amazing selection of schnapps.
If you walk around the old-town area, you’ll find beautiful colored buildings and arrive at the top where the Nuremberg Castle sits high above the city. It’s a steep walk up, but not to be missed as the view from the top is incredible.
Nuremberg is just an hour from Munich by train and you can see most of the old town in a day. Don’t miss it on your next trip to Germany!
