A few weeks ago I went on a quick trip to Portland with my friend Thomas. We had such a great time exploring the beautiful landscapes of the Oregon Coast and Hood River Valley, and I think we did a good job of making the most out of the three days from a food and beer perspective. I’ll admit that one morning we had two breakfasts (who can say no to an Acai Bowl?).
I finally got around to editing my photos last night and coming up with a list of our favorite places we ate on the trip. Hopefully you saw our Pok Pok inspired Thai herbal salad in the meantime. In no particular order, here is The Taste Edit’s list of Portland food recommendations:
Clive Coffee / Ratio
We are partnering with Clive Coffee and Ratio on some really exciting projects in the next few months, so Thomas and I stopped in for a quick visit. If you love coffee and beautiful things, you need to pay a visit to their site or showroom. Clive Coffee offers a curated selection of the most beautiful espresso machines you will ever see (made more beautiful by the addition of custom wood panels), and their Ratio (handmade in Portland) is the best coffee maker we’ve ever used.
Clyde Common
We stopped in here for after-dinner beers on both nights of our stay at the Ace Hotel. They had a good selection of beer and nice ambiance, and I had a great time learning about new beers from Thomas, whose knowledge of beers and brewing is impressive.
Salt & Straw
There is one in LA and one in Portland. Why did they skip San Francisco? We may never know, but if you’re in either place, definitely check out this amazing ice cream shop. I have the most boring taste in ice cream in the world (vanilla, or when we are in Italy, Fior di Latte), but I did try a sample of the honey lavender ice cream that Thomas ordered and it was really good. You can find proprietary Salt & Straw ice cream flavors at Sightglass Coffee’s affogato bar in San Francisco. Check our when we visited here.
Upper Left Coffee Roasters
The interior design in this place was beautiful and the coffee was great. The almond milk cappuccino got my stamp of approval and I brought home a few bags of coffee.
Harlow
I think this was both of our favorite breakfast place of the trip. Everything is gluten free and vegetarian, and a lot of the dishes are vegan. You can’t go wrong with the Outlaw Scramble (try it with smoky tempeh instead of eggs, very tasty) or the Pesto Garden Scramble.
Tasty n Alder
This place had great breakfast as well, but if you’re trying to avoid meat, you’ll have a hard time. I ordered the breakfast flatbread without bacon and it was really good. The brunch cocktails here were also great. I had the Oregon Orchard, made with gin, apricot liquor, verjus, and Regan’s no. 6. The interior design here was pretty as well.
Check out some of the landscape shots from our trip below, and be sure to head over to Thomas and Julia’s website as well for more details on the itinerary and Thomas’s amazing photography.
