The Fremont Diner was always one of our favorite restaurants in the Bay Area, and we always made an effort to stop by when we headed to wine country. Fans of the the Fremont Diner everywhere were disappointed to hear of its closing, but fortunately it reopened as Boxcar Fried Chicken and Biscuits. The new restaurant offers a more limited menu that still includes our favorite fried chicken and pimento cheese, as well as the Fremont Diner’s famous shakes. The food is classic homestyle “diner” fare, but way better. It’s taken to the next level with fresh local and seasonal ingredients. The main difference you’ll notice between the old Fremont Diner and the new Boxcar Fried Chicken is that the new restaurant is a counter-service concept.
Our go-to is the Nashville style hot fried chicken, which is “so hot it will set a cheatin’ man straight.” Try it with syrup! Don’t forget to try their milkshakes (even if you take one for the road). They’re amazing! We recommend trying the horchata or cookies n’ cream.
Summer and harvest season means lots of out-of-town tourists and lots of crowds, so we highly recommend getting there early. It gets very busy and the waits can be long. The new Boxcar Fried Chicken and Biscuits has a much quicker wait time, so we’re hopeful that will continue.
Other things we would recommend are the deviled eggs, potato salad, fried oysters, and the biscuits. You can’t go wrong! They offer great wines like Matthiason and Scibe, or bring your own bottle for a $5 corkage fee. If reading this made you hungry and you can’t make it to Sonoma, try this pimento cheese dip, these deviled eggs, and these fritters, and our favorite fried chicken to hold you over!
