Napoli is an ancient city and has several glamorous, historic luxury hotels on its beautiful seafront. If you like modern design, we’d suggest staying at the Romeo Hotel, a newer addition to the waterfront. With sleek interiors and luxurious touches around every corner, this ultra-modern hotel is the perfect contrast to the beautiful chaos of this southern Italian city.
Located just across the street from the Port of Naples, the location of the Romeo Hotel couldn’t be any better. It’s less than a five-minute walk from the ferries to Capri and Ischia, and a 10-minute walk to Napoli’s historic center.
The Romeo Hotel used to be the office of a major Italian shipping company and was renovated into a 79-room hotel. The small size of the hotel means the service is impeccable, and the owners spared no expense in outfitting the rooms with the best technology and finishes. Lights and curtains can all be controlled electronically, and the bathrooms are luxurious.
During our stay, we enjoyed coming home each evening to a cocktail in one of the hotel’s several bars. The lobby bar is stunning, with water features, mood lighting, and a glass wine cellar. The hotel also features a more casual bar and restaurant on the 9th floor, with an outdoor patio and pool, and a Michelin-starred restaurant, Il Comandante on the 10th floor.
We walked all over town from the Romeo Hotel. The famous Teatro San Carlo is just around the corner, as is the Grand Cafe Gambrinus. One night we walked all the way back from the 50 Kalo pizzeria in the fashionable Chiaia district, with the lights of all of the yachts docked in the harbor reflecting off the sea.
Finally, one feature we never knew we’d be so appreciative of is the air conditioning. Southern Italy in the summer is extremely hot, and the air conditioning in most restaurants and public places is not the best. At the end of a long, hot Italian day, there’s nothing like an icy martini in a perfectly chilled lounge.
