When it comes to Italian food, there is no denying that pizza is one of the country’s most popular dishes. And when it comes to pizza, there’s no better place to find authentic Italian pizza than Napoli. As the birthplace of pizza, there is so much competition in Naples that the vast majority of pizzerias are very good, however, there are a few that stand out from the crowd.
Restaurant 50 Kalo Pizzeria lives up to its reputation as one of the best authentic Italian pizzerias with a modern atmosphere, located on the west side of Napoli. Upon entering the restaurant, you walk past the pizza kitchen with pizzaiolos tossing dough and adding sauce to pizzas that are quickly crisped in a raging hot wood-fired pizza oven. True Neapolitan pizzas are only cooked for a few minutes so that the crust is perfectly charred and the center is a bit soft.
We tried the classic Margherita pizza (tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, basil) and it was one of the best pizzas we’ve ever had! The crust was thin yet chewy and had a perfect char from being cooked in the wood-fired ovens. The tomato sauce was fresh and flavorful, made with local tomatoes from the slopes of Mount Vesuvius, while the cheese melted perfectly on top of it all. We also loved the spicy diavola pizza with strands of creamy burrata on top.
If you’re ever in Napoli looking for an amazing pizza experience, be sure to check out 50 Kalo. They also now have a 50 Kalo in London. We tried a delivery pizza and it wasn’t quiet the same, but we’d recommend trying it in person if you’re in London. 50 Kalo is our second favorite pizzeria in Napoli (click for our hands down favorite pizza here) and not very touristy.
