One of our favorite neighborhoods in Baltimore was the Fells Point district. This historic area with cobblestone streets was the most charming part of town that we visited. Lined with restaurants and bars, it’s the perfect destination for a night out. Thames Street Oyster House in Fells Point is a must. It was a nice evening, so we opted to sit outside on the back patio. There’s also an upstairs dining room with a view of the water if that’s what you are in the mood for.
The restaurant has an awesome raw bar, with an amazing selection of East- and West-coast oysters listed on a separate menu. Write in your selections and within a few minutes you’ll be slurping some of the finest oysters in America. Being from California, we typically gravitate toward Pacific oysters, so here we took the opportunity to try some East coast varieties.
The entree items were just as good as the oysters. We tried one of the restaurant’s giant, luxurious cast iron crab cakes, which is served simply with grilled vegetables, and one of their signature lobster rolls made with butter poached Maine lobster. This is by far our favorite way to cook lobster at home, and if you have not tried it, you should get a copy of The French Laundry cookbook for detailed instructions.
If you’re really hungry or coming with a group, the restaurant also offers a five-pound baked and stuffed Maine lobster, as well as a New England Clam and Lobster Boil. If we have a chance to go back, we’ll bring friends and try them!
The Oyster House is a busy place and often has a wait. We’d suggest putting your name on the list and heading across the street to the new Sagamore Pendry Hotel for a drink at its gorgeous waterfront bar while you wait.
