The American Bar at The Stafford London is one of the city’s most enduring cocktail sanctuaries, dating back to the interwar era when it catered to visiting American and Canadian officers.
This hidden history spot retains that Roaring Twenties charm. The current interior, refreshed in 2018 by Rosendale Design, preserves the historic essence—rich mahogany panelling, a marble bar, and walls covered in donated sports memorabilia and club ties—from vintage aircraft models to boxing gloves.
On entering, you’re greeted by objects dangling from above: baseball caps, model planes, even a large screwdriver, a cheeky nod to an old bar legend. The layout opens onto the courtyard, Blue Ball Yard, lined with cosy cottage-style mews rooms, allowing indoor-outdoor flow via full-height terrace doors.

We visited on the recommendation of a friend in Scotland—and the bar team truly delivered. The Italian bartenders are nothing short of stellar. They bring flair, skill, and warmth—what you’d expect from Europe’s top mixologists.
Cocktail menus are equally impressive: full lists of Negronis, Old Fashioneds, Martinis—and one standout: the “New York Happy Meal.” It pairs a crisp classic Martini (choose American Bar gin or Tito’s vodka) with a side of seasoned fries, for £25. It’s playful and sophisticated—a wink to American diners with an elegant twist.

Why go? For the mix of history, atmosphere, and top-tier cocktails. You can sip a perfectly chilled Martini while studying map collections above you, feel the St. James’s whisper of wartime tales, then step out into the beauty of the intimate courtyard.
If you want timeless elegance—with an edge of fun—The American Bar delivers. It balances tradition and refreshment.
