This Italian bistro tucked inside the historic Passage des Panoramas, has been on our list of Parisian restaurants to check out for quite some time. Normally, we don’t stay in this area, but when we found ourselves at a hotel a block away, we seized the opporunity.

Racines, led by Sardinian chef Simone Tondo, blends traditional Italian cuisine with the casual elegance of a Parisian bistro. Our meal began with an unexpected amuse-bouche: a small pizza that was more like a focaccia, airy and flavorful. The vitello tonnato was a textbook-perfect execution, with tender veal draped in a creamy, umami-rich tuna sauce. The spinach tortellini were delicate, packed with greens and just the right amount of butter. But the highlight was the rich Bolognese, paired with a natural Umbrian wine that had some skin contact—just enough to add some texture and richness without crossing into full orange wine territory.

Racines is known for its impressive wine selection, with a strong focus on natural Italian and French bottles. The staff is knowledgeable and happy to guide you toward something offbeat and interesting. The restaurant also offers a short but well-curated cocktail menu to start and an extensive list of digestifs to finish.
If you’re dining with a group, the cozy upstairs private dining room is a perfect option, offering a more intimate space to linger over plates of handmade pasta and glasses of wine. The ambiance at Racines is warm, unfussy, and inviting, with a charm that makes you want to stay a little longer for one more amaro. The staff is friendly without being overbearing, and the entire experience feels relaxed. If you’re looking for a restaurant that serves honest, beautifully prepared Italian food
