After cocktails at Bemelmans Bar, we headed back downtown for dinner at The Eddy, a small New American restaurant with a very French wine list. The space is extremely cozy, especially in the fall, and their cocktail menu wast tempting us as we waited for our table.
The cocktail list changes with the seasons and the ones we tried were perfect for fall—the Apple Jacques (Manoir de Montreuil Calvados, Maison Dudognon Cognac, Barolo Chinato, and Absinthe) and The Honey Badger (Rittenhouse Rye, Yellow Chartreuse, Contratto Bitter, Angostura, Orange Bitters).
The Eddy offers a chef’s tasting menu (in addition to an à la carte), which was what really stood out to us when we were researching restaurants. We were eager to try it, mostly because by San Francisco standards, the pricing seemed extremely reasonable. It turned out to be a great menu, and not too much food at all, consisting of a first course of oysters and toast (bread from Balthazar) with chicken liver mousse, a second course of shishito peppers and a chicory salad, and a third course of veal porterhouse with assorted sides. Dessert was both a lovely French apple cake and Ferme de Jouvence cheese .
We would totally recommend a stop at this cozy East Village spot. The service was friendly and attentive without being overbearing, and we really loved our server’s alternative wine pairings (white Burgundy with the veal porterhouse was incredible). Be sure to make a reservation as the restaurant is small and fills up quickly.
