One of the most charming things about life in Switzerland is the honor system used at self-service farms all over the country. Drive down any country road and you’ll see signs for self-service farm stands everywhere.
We’ve been discovering (and supporting) the self-service system all over our Canton. You can find everything from eggs and poultry to milk, cheese, and vegetables. Our neighbors, who are vignerons, have the most gorgeous grapes and squash in the fall. You can pay with cash or Twint (an app that connects to your bank account). There’s usually a box with cash where you can make your own change.
When we heard about Ferme du Moulin d’Amour, which sells water buffalo mozzarella, we made a Saturday morning trip and it became one of our go-to producers. It reminds us a lot of Double 8 Dairy, in Sonoma, but this one is only a 20-minute drive from our house and you can walk right up to the water buffalo!
In addition to the mozzarella, the farm owners have a friend who makes incredibly delicious gelato with their buffalo milk. They also sell buffalo milk yogurt, a harder cheese (like a tomme) that is spectacular, and they have a freezer of buffalo sausage. You can also call ahead to pre-order buffalo veal steaks and ground buffalo meat.
Ferme du Moulin D’Amour is located in Gollion, a village just outside Lausanne. It’s definitely worth a visit and do not miss the chocolate gelato! The self-service is even open on Sundays.
