This unpretentious wine bar is one of Burgundy’s hidden gems – and one of the few restaurants we love so much we ate there multiple times on the same trip! Located in beautiful Nuits-Saint-Georges, the restaurant is owned by Domaine Prieure Roch, which was founded in 1988 by a partner in the famed Domaine de la Romanee-Conti. (Get one of our custom fine art photos of Romanne-Conti vineyards here.)
Domaine Prieure Roch focuses on the wines we love most – organic, biodynamic farming with minimal intervention in the cellar. The result is a pure reflection of the grapes and the terroir, untainted by new oak. Due to the relationship with DRC, the wines are sought-after and the house imposes quantity limits on purchases. You can buy wine at the restaurant between services.
Call to book Le Bist’roch for lunch or dinner, or it’s also perfectly fine to stop in mid-afternoon for wines by the glass from their extensive list of mostly French natural wines. Burgundy is of course well-represented on the wine list, but their list is so good we always opt for something different – like Vouvray or bubbles.
What we appreciate most about Le Bist’roch’s food is that it’s as simple and honest as the wines. No foam, no fussy plating – just perfectly executed French country food made with natural, local ingredients. Lunch and dinner are set menus of three or four courses, and the prices are incredibly reasonable. A few of our favorite dishes included the slow-cooked lamb rillette served with shallots and preserved lemon, crisp chicken and tarragon terrine, and a flaky fresh fig mille-feuille.
