One of our primary goals on Capri was to escape the masses of tourists in the busy towns of Capri and Anacapri and find more unique spots that locals would frequent. Literally everyone we asked recommended Da Gelsomina. “It’s not super fancy, and you might see granny in the kitchen….” Sold. We booked a table and they picked us up at our hotel (this is a service they provide to anyone staying in Anacapri, as the property is on a remote corner of the island).
Da Gelsomina has been preparing local specialties for generations, and Pasquale, the son-in-law of the owners, was happy to give us a tour of the property. Capri is a tiny, rocky island, and space is at a premium, so they grow something on every corner of the property. The family plants potatoes between rows of grapes, loads of lemons, a variety of other produce, and raises pigs, chickens, and rabbits.
When we were seated, we were happy to find that no one around us spoke English, and Pasquale offered us a glass of house made white wine, a plate of antipasti and an order of their secret recipe house marinated anchovies.
For lunch, we shared the famous ravioli capresi, made with marjoram and Caciotta cheese, and a wonderful seafood pasta. Both were perfect examples of the type of authentic, rustic Italian food we were looking for.
After lunch, we took a stroll around the property to see more of the farm, where we ran into these adorable pigs, then headed down the short path to an overlook at the end of the island. Keep an eye out for these two in our upcoming video!
We wandered up the short path that Pasquale suggested. It’s a very short and easy stroll from Da Gelsomina. At the end is an overlook at one of the ends of Capri. You can see the entire southern coast of the Island, all the way from the famous lighthouse to Capri’s iconic Faraglioni rock formation (last seen here). If you’re headed to Capri, a visit to this magical property is a must.
Thank you to Da Gelsomina for hosting us for such a lovely visit. We can’t wait to return next year to try the cooking classes beginning in summer 2018.
